Types of Burial/Cemetery Property Traditional In-Ground Burial Refers to burying a full-body casket or urn of cremated remains into the ground in a grave, also referred to as a plot. Single Depth (Standard Plot) Offers space for the burial of a casket(s) and/or urn(s) in the ground in one layer. This is what most people would consider a classic grave. Double Depth Lawn Crypt Offers space for the burial of two or more casket(s) and/or urn(s) in the ground. A pre-installed concrete structure allows for caskets and/or urns to be stacked vertically on top of each other, much like a bunkbed in the ground. Side-by-Side Plot Pairs Two adjacent plots that offer space for the burial of two or more casket(s) and/or urn(s) in the ground in one layer in what most people would consider a classic grave. Cremation Only Plots Offers space for the burial of one or more urn(s) in the ground in one layer. Full-body caskets are not permitted. Family Estates These properties reserve a larger area of cemetery property for family use, offering space for multiple burials and allowing family members to rest together. Estates are often set apart from the rest of the cemetery by gates, hedges, and/or low walls, making them private or semi-private (though still open to the public). Cremation Niches An enclosed cubby with space for one or more urn(s) of cremated remains for above-ground burial. Niches are arranged in stacked rows called "Levels." Indoor Cremation Niche Offers space for one or more urn(s) in a niche located inside a mausoleum or similar structure. Often features a glass front to display urns and other mementos. Outdoor Cremation Niche Offers space for one or more urn(s) in a niche located outside. Often made of granite (and thus sometimes called a Granite Niche) with space for a nameplate on the front of the niche. Mausoleum Crypts Offers above-ground burial space for a casket and/or urn(s) inside a mausoleum structure. Mausoleum crypts are arranged in stacked rows referred to as "levels" and can be either indoor (inside a mausoleum building) or outdoor (in a mausoleum structure that is open to the elements). Crypts usually offer space for a memorial plaque on the front. Glossary Cemetery A privately owned area of land accessible to the public designated for human burial with a range of burial options. Cemetery Property The area in the cemetery (plot, niche, crypt, etc.) that you are purchasing the burial rights for. In most cases, you will not own the land itself; rather, your purchase gives you the right to that space for burial. Think of it like a theatre ticket: you have purchased the right to sit in a specified seat, though the seat itself remains the property of the theatre. Burial Rights Also called interment rights (for ground burial), inurnment rights (for cremation), or entombment rights (for above-ground burial). Gives the owner the right to bury the indicated number of human remains. We also refer to the Number of Burial Rights as the Number of Spaces. Burial Fees Also called interment fees, o/c or open/close fees, inurnment fees, entombment fees, or cemetery service fees. Charged per burial by the cemetery in addition to the cost of purchasing cemetery property. In some cases, our properties include these fees; check under "Merchandise and Services Included" in each listing for more details. Direction Facing This refers to the direction the deceased would be facing if they were to sit up and look out, or in some cases the direction the grave marker is facing. Different cultures and religions may have a preferred direction, or individuals may desire a certain direction based on an important landmark or view. Previously Occupied This refers to a cemetery property that has previously held a burial. Previously occupied properties are frequently offered at a significant discount, so can be a good choice for budget conscious planners. Please note that the vast majority of our properties are unused; any previously occupied properties will be clearly marked on the listing. Types of Grave Marker Called by many names, this is the marker that displays information about the deceased buried on the property. Upright Granite Headstone Also called an Upright Granite Monument. This is a traditional stone gravestone that sits upright at the head of the grave or on top of the burial. Not all plots allow for this type of headstone, so be sure to check the listing carefully if this type of marker is important to you. Level Bronze Plaque Also known as a Bronze Memorial Plaque, Bronze Marker, or Flat Marker. This is an engraved marker that lies flush to the ground over the burial. Memorial Stone Also known as a Nature Rock Memorial. This is usually an option for cremation burials, and combines elements of both traditional upright headstones and level plaques. Spaces Can refer either to the designation of a property within a cemetery lot or the amount of burial rights for a given property.
